Prof. Dr. Matthias Ecker-Ehrhardt will be a guest member of the team at the Chair of International Institutions and Peace Processes during the summer semester of 2025
He studied political science at Freie Universität Berlin, where he earned his doctorate in 2003 with a dissertation on ‘Argument, Coalitions, Cognitions: The German Debate on the Eastward Expansion of the EU.’
From 2005 to 2013, he was a senior researcher in the ‘Transnational Conflicts and International Institutions’ department at the Berlin Social Science Centre (WZB). Between 2014 and 2017, he led the DFG project ‘The Communicated IO: Public Relations, Inclusion of Civil Society Actors and the Global Politicisation of International Organisations’ at the Centre for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Security Policy at the Free University of Berlin. In 2020/21, he was a senior fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Centre for Global Cooperation Research, at the University of Duisburg-Essen. From 2021-24, he led the BMBF-funded project ‘(De)Legitimation Surveys: Political Ideology, Peer Opinion, Nonstate Actor Inclusion, and the Social Legitimacy of Global Governance Institutions’ there. Matthias Ecker-Ehrhardt has substituted for several professorships in the field of international relations at Freie Universität Berlin (2012/13, 2017), the University of Leipzig (2013/14, 2017-20) and Otto Friedrich University Bamberg (2024-25).
