Graduation Ceremony 2025

Once again this year, around 180 graduates of the bachelor's and master's programmes in Faculty 03 were able to receive their degree certificates in person in the presence of friends and family. The graduation ceremony took place at the end of May in the ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ's Festsaal in the Casino. With around 600 registrations, the event was once again well attended.

The event was moderated by Prof. Dr Alexander Schmidt-Catran. Since his election as Dean of Studies, he has been looking forward to this evening, he said. The evening was accompanied by pianist Lan Phien Pham with pieces ranging from Brahms to Debussy.

Prof. Dr. Viera Pirker, Vice President for Studies and Teaching, congratulated the graduates 'with full recognition and respect' on their graduation. She said that the certificate was also a sign of hard work and determination. She encouraged the graduates to remain critical and to stand up for the values of ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ.

As befits a graduation ceremony at ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ, the university's namesake Johann Wolfgang Goethe was quoted: 'Enough words have been exchanged, let me finally see some action.' Prof. Dr. Lars Meier, Dean of the Faculty, also congratulated the graduates and made special mention of the different starting points and study conditions of the current graduates.

And yet: 'You are all here now.' However, this new social position also comes with responsibility - against the backdrop of rising right-wing extremism and increasing social inequality, Prof. Meier emphasised the responsibility of the individual.

The student speech was given by members of the student council. Beginning with a heartfelt 'Na geht doch!' (You did it!), they also congratulated their fellow students and thanked them for their social commitment outside of their regular studies.

'I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change, I am changing the things I cannot accept.' – Angela Davis

With this quote from black civil rights activist Angela Davis, the student council members recalled the numerous student protests that shaped their time at university. The students also had some advice for the friends and families of the graduates on what their loved ones could do after graduation: 'Please ask again after Christmas.'

This year's keynote speech was given by Prof. Dr. Stephan Lessenich. Under the title 'As if nothing had happened,' the professor of social theory and director of the renowned Institute for Social Research spoke, despite the festive occasion, about less pleasant but particularly urgent issues: 'This society has a problem with its problems,' Lessenich diagnosed, speaking about society's collective denial of reality in the face of existential problems such as climate change. Although these problems have lost some of their prominence, they have by no means lost their relevance. The fact that people continue to act as if everything can go on as before is as sociologically remarkable as it is frightening. The lecture thus underscored the relevance of critical theory, which is historically significant for the department. The question 'What can we do?' is difficult to answer. Freely quoting Neil Armstrong, Lessenich recommended to everyone present that they first develop respect for reality. This is a big step for individuals, but still a small one for humanity.

At the end of the event, the graduates were ceremoniously presented with their certificates. Refreshments were served in the foyer, and many participants stayed for a lively get-together until late in the evening.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the 2025 graduation ceremony and would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate all graduates on their graduation!
