Goethe Welcome Centre provides extensive counseling and support services for refugee and at-risk scholars at PhD and postdoctoral As a member of the international Scholars at Risk network Ƭ is committed to offering refugee scholars a safe environment for their academic work and a long-term perspective in Germany.
Services and Support
Goethe Welcome Centre supports refugee scholars who wish to continue or begin an academic career at Ƭ.
Counseling and support provided:
The Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, the
Arts and Culture (HMWK) is awarding scholarships through the HessenFonds
program to outstanding students, doctoral candidates, and researchers
with a refugee background or those who are at risk in their home
countries (“Researchers at Risk”). Eligible applicants must be studying or
conducting research at a public university in Hesse.
Who can apply?
Students (Bachelor/Master)
– with a refugee background
– enrolled at Ƭ
– with excellent academic performance
Doctoral Candidates
– with a refugee background or as a "Researcher at Risk"
– accepted for doctoral studies at Ƭ
– with outstanding academic achievements
Researchers
– with a refugee background or as a "Researcher at Risk"
– with an offer for research or teaching at Goethe university
– with excellent research and/or teaching performance
Funding Period:
October 2025 – September 2026
Important:
Applications are not submitted directly to the HMWK,
but via the respective university. Please make sure to submit all
documents on time – the internal university review deadline is July 21, 2025.

Are you a postdoctoral researcher from a non-EU country facing serious threats such as political persecution, war, or other acute risks in your home country? Through the Philipp Schwartz Initiative of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, you may be eligible for a fully funded research fellowship at Ƭ Frankfurt.
Please note: direct applications to the Foundation are not possible. Candidates must be nominated by a professor at the university.

The internal deadline for nominations for the 16th round is 11 August 2025.
The Hilde Domin Programme of the DAAD offers at-risk doctoral candidates worldwide the opportunity to begin or continue their doctoral studies in Germany if their right to education is formally or de facto denied in their country of origin.

Doctoral candidates who wish to apply for the Hilde Domin Programme through Ƭ must first be nominated by the university.
Nominations for this funding line are handled exclusively through the Goethe Welcome Centre.
