The Taunus Observatory on the mount Kleiner Feldberg
The Taunus Observatory (TO) on the mount Kleiner Feldberg in the Taunus mountain range (825 metres above sea level) is a facility of the ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ Frankfurt am Main and is part of the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (IAU) and the in Department 11 Geosciences/Geography. The TO is a research platform with a seismological station and a laboratory for atmospheric sciences. Other institutions are also represented at the TO:
- Hans Ludwig Neumann (astronomical) Observatory of the Frankfurt Physical Society
- Measuring container for pollutants of the Hessian State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG)
- Measuring field of the German Weather Service (DWD)
- Beehives of the Institute of Apiology (affiliated institute of ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ)
Atmospheric science laboratory
The
atmospheric science laboratory is housed in a two-storey container building
with a roof platform for sampling the atmosphere on the top of the Kleiner
Feldberg. The Taunus Observatory was included in the European research network
ACTRIS as an observational platform in 2021. Further information on the
instruments and research objectives can be found here → ACTRIS.
Seismological station
The seismological station TNS of the observatory (coordinates: LAT = 50.2225, LON = 8.4473, ELEV = 815.0) is equipped with a 3-component broadband seismometer 'Streckeisen STS-2' (data stream: 80 Hz (VPS), 20 Hz (VBB) and 1 Hz (LP)). It is part of the German Regional Seismic Network (GRSN).
