Our department enables students to participate in international UN simulations. This includes the annual preparation of a Frankfurt delegation for the National Model United Nations (NMUN) in New York, as well as providing content and organisational support to the student team that organises a similar conference in Frankfurt every year – the MainMUN. More detailed information on the individual UN simulations can be found below.
Important information about NMUN applications: Important information about NMUN applications: Interested students must apply to participate in NMUN. The application period begins at the end of June, and all relevant information will be available on this page.
Registration period for 2026: 8 July 2025 – 23 July 2025
Registration via email Prof. Dr. Lisbeth Zimmermann
A prerequisite for NMUN participation is proof of previous MUN experience (national or international) or proof of participation in the IO seminar offered by our chair in one of the previous semesters (see 'Teaching' section).
Preparing for the delegation work on site is time-consuming and intensive.
Please direct any questions about participating in or collaborating with MainMUN directly to the MainMUN team.

NMUN Delegation 2025
As early as 1946, students from around the world came together to represent a country of their choice on the international political stage.
The National Model United Nations (NMUN) upholds a long-standing tradition of enabling student delegations to gain practical insights into the functioning of the United Nations. It provides an opportunity to apply acquired academic knowledge, develop soft skills, engage in negotiation and diplomacy in English, build lasting friendships, and establish international networks.
NMUN is organized by a non-governmental organization that works closely with the United Nations. Each year, it allows students to take on the role of diplomats, representing the interests of their assigned country in various UN committees held at UN headquarters in New York.
Since 2003, students of political science at ¿´Æ¬Èí¼þ have had the opportunity to join a delegation of approximately 25 students to travel to New York annually and represent a UN member state in the committees of the world organization. To meet this challenge, the prospective delegates must prepare thoroughly for their roles in bodies such as the Security Council or the General Assembly.
The project cycle begins each summer semester and spans one year. During this time, students participate in an NMUN project seminar, including weekend workshops, prepare for other MUN conferences, and contribute actively to the preparation for the New York conference. Moreover, they engage in self-organized teamwork in areas such as fundraising, public relations, and team building to help ensure the success of this resource-intensive project.
During the simulation, students are expected to form alliances with delegates from other states, draft resolutions, and represent their assigned country's positions and interests in both formal sessions and informal negotiations. This requires not only cultural awareness and diplomatic conduct, but also strict adherence to the UN “Rules of Procedure" that govern the simulation.
Over the years, several delegations from Frankfurt have received awards for their outstanding performance, such as the Position Paper Award for exceptional preparation and written work prior to the conference, and the Outstanding Delegation Award for their realistic and persuasive representation during the conference.
The UN simulation in Frankfurt was established by former NMUN delegates. Every year since the winter of 2005, the Westend campus of the Goethe-University is converted into a diplomatic venue for four days. With an average of 200 delegates coming from all parts of Europe, the MainMUN has been established to be one of the biggest MUN conferences in Germany. The conference and its program containing round tables with experts, prominent guest speakers and various other events, is organized voluntarily by students. The collegial conference organization is supported by Prof. Dr. Tanja Brühl and her team.
