The application procedure

You only ever compete within your department. As the Deutschlandstipendium is a merit-based scholarship, your grade counts first, followed by your social commitment and other social factors. On average, we receive around 2300 applications and can award around 600 scholarships.

In the winter semester 2024/25, 600 students were supported with the Deutschlandstipendium. The number of scholarships awarded is linked to the funding acquired. As these vary each year, it is not possible to give an exact figure for the number of scholarships to be awarded.

Foreign students must translate the following documents into the German grading system: Current transcript/proof of grades (Uni Assist).

The is used for conversion into the German grading system.

The grade limits are set individually for each department, i.e. the grade limits depend on how many students apply to the respective department. We recommend that you have at least a grade of 2.5 or better.

You can only apply for scholarships in the department in which you are mainly studying.

Students with a double major can decide which of the two programs they apply for.

Students with two main subjects and students studying to become teachers at grammar schools or secondary schools are assigned to the subject area of their first subject.

Students studying to become teachers at elementary school or special schools are assigned to subject area 04.

For each subject area, a pre-selection is first carried out in the International Studies Department. The pre-selection takes into account the criteria of performance, social commitment and personal and social circumstances.

Each department forms a jury of at least two jurors (university lecturers and academic staff). The jury evaluates the submitted, anonymized applications in accordance with § 2 para. 2 StipV according to the following criteria:

  1.   personal and social competence
  2.   extracurricular or extracurricular commitment
  3.   special achievements in the form of overcoming biographical hurdles

No. Applications can only be submitted online via the portal.

Applications that are not submitted via the online form cannot be considered.

The process takes about three months. At the beginning of the winter semester, the scholarship holders will be selected.

The system has then determined that you are not within the standard period of study in any of your degree programs, or that you are not studying a degree program that is eligible for funding.

Yes. It is possible to reapply next year if you are still within the standard period of study.
